Watch Tesla Model 3 drive itself in parking lot — new Smart Summon feature

Tesla’s new version 10 software update adds Smart Summon, which enables you to have the car come to you in a parking lot. It’s only supposed to work in parking lots, not public streets. It truly is self-driving but in a limited environment. In this example, I’m in a fairly quiet parking lot, but I also tried it in a crowded lot with lots of pedestrians and cars moving around. That worked too, but was a little nerve racking.

I did have some problems. In one case the car was about to go through a light to enter a public road instead of driving around the lot. I stopped it right before it got to the intersection and the person behind my Tesla had to wait while I walked over to it to drive it out of her way.  It can also be challenged in parking lots with one-way lanes. Sometimes it drives around just fine, but other times it’s driven the wrong way on that lane.  In this screen shot from an official Tesla promotional video you can see that the car is going against the way the cars are parked, suggesting it’s going in the wrong direction.  That’s minor compared to some of the issues reported by The Verge.

Look at the direction of the park cars and notice the direction the Tesla is moving in. It looks like it’s going the wrong way (Screen shot from Tesla promotional video)
