Samsung’s foldable ‘glass’ smartphone getting good reviews but prone to scratching

Galaxy Z Flip (Samsung)

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip smartphone is something of a throw back to the old fashioned “flip” phones. But while you can buy a flip phone today for under $50, the Samsung version will set you back $1,380.  But for that you get what Samsung says is a phone made of ultra-thin-glass that folds in the middle and, when unfolded, reveals a typical looking smartphone with a 6.7-inch display. It folds up to half that size, making it convenient to store in your pocket.

Engadet’s Cherlynn Low fell in love with the new phone.  “The Z Flip is the first iteration of a folding smartphone that actually makes sense. The phone arrived in stores on Valentine’s day, and after testing out a sample for 24 hours, I’ve already caught feelings.” CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt has more mixed feelings. In an early look at the new phone, she declared that “using a foldable phone is a totally different experience than what most of us are used to today. Living with a phone that you have to open to use calls for a readjustment, no matter how much nostalgia you might have for flip phones of old.”

But The Verge reported on a video from Zack Nelson’s who torture tested the phone leading to the conclusion, “The Z Flip’s display starts showing permanent marks and scratches far earlier than actual glass would.”  You can watch Nelson’s video below and decide for yourself.
