QUESTIONS: IS IT CROSS APP? What about mobile to web? NOT CROSS APP BUT YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE A NEW MESSENGER APP and opt in to experience

Does it work with group chats as well as one-to-one

connect to — had a chat in the past. For IG it’s about following. If you’re following me you can send me a message already and you can

Snapchat may have pioneered disappearing posts in social media, but Facebook is adding a disappearing act to messaging.

Vanish Mode, for Facebook’s Messenger and Instagram, enables users to send messages that disappear once they are viewed and the viewer leaves the conversation.

You can turn it on by swiping up from your mobile device while in an existing chat thread.

Vanish mode only works with people you’re “connected to,” which means you’ve previously engaged them in a chat conversation and it’s also opt-in so you chose whether or not to engage in Vanish mode with someone.  You’ll be notified if they take a screenshot on their device but there is always the possibility that someone might photograph a screen from a different device so I’d avoid using this feature with any content that could be extremely embarrassing or get you into trouble.

In a blog post, Facebook’s positions the service for messages “you want to say in the moment without worrying about it sticking around,” which could be a broad range of messages ranging from wacky photos to snarky comments. I know some will be tempted to also use it for what I’ll euphemistically call “naughty” photos but, again, I’d caution that there are ways that such images can be captured and, even if you’re notified of a screenshot, they can be used against you by someone who now or in the future decides to betray your trust.

Talk with your kids

Parents should talk with their kids about the advantages and dangers of using this feature. It’s a great way to remain in the moment and make sure that posts that could be slightly embarrassing or just a bit wacky don’t wind up in the hands of friends they’re not meant for, college admissions officers or friends you haven’t met yet. But it’s important to remind kids and that  anything that’s digital might be captured and used against you in the future.,

The feature is being rolled out now on the Messenger app in the U.S. and is coming soon to other countries. The Instagram version will roll out in the U.S. “in the coming weeks,” according to Facebook
