The New iPhone: What to Expect

The wait is almost over.  The new iPhone, likely called the “iPhone 5,” will be announced this morning at an Apple press event in San Francisco that gets underway at 10:00 AM Pacific time (1 PM ET).

Based on all the leaks and rumors, here’s what to expect:

A larger screen

There will likely be a 4 inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 640 by 1136, according to Gizmodo.

Tall and thin

The phone will be slightly thinner and taller to accomodate the larger screen.

Faster data network

Most Apple watchers expect the new phone to support the cell phone carriers’  newer and faster 4G LTE networks

Faster processor and better battery

The phone will almost certainly have a faster processor and there is speculation that it will have longer battery life. Certainly the larger size makes a bigger battery possible and the power drain fro the faster processor and LTE make it even more desirable.

New doc connector

Apple is likely to replace the existing 30-pin connector with a smaller 9-pin version to free up real estate at the bottom of the phone and make it possible to move the ear phone jack from the top to the bottom. They will likely offer an adapter for use with existing cables and accessories but there are likely to be some compatibility problems with audio systems and other accessories that have a slot specifically for an iPhone.

Video tour?

iLab factory has posted a video that is supposedly a tour of the new phone.
